How events ripple
The forces behind the news
Most world events are not isolated. Some act on each other directly: a fuel shock feeds into protests, protests push up a government's borrowing costs. Others never touch, yet move together because the same force is pushing both. Those forces are the drivers. Learn a driver once and you can read a dozen headlines at a glance.
What a line tells you
- “feeds into”
- One is part of the reason the other is happening.
- “affects”
- One changes the other's course or odds, without having started it.
- “is a response to”
- One is happening because of the other.
- “amplifies”
- The other was already happening; this one makes it bigger or spreads it.
- “shares a driver with”
- Neither caused the other: the same underlying force is pushing both.
- “competes with”
- Both pull on the same limited thing, so a gain for one is a loss for the other.
Solid lines carry an arrow for direction: one way when one event drives the other, both ways when each drives the other. Dotted lines have none, because a shared driver pushes both.
Every line also names how the ripple travels, the channel: fuel prices, bond spreads, voters' mood. A dotted line names the driver behind both events. See all drivers.
Gulf war energy prices
What it is. The war with Iran has cut how much oil and gas can leave the Gulf, so fuel costs more almost everywhere.
How it moves events. Brent above $100 pushes up diesel, freight and heating bills, which lifts inflation, squeezes household budgets and moves oil money between countries.
What to watch. Brent crude above $100 a barrel

Cost-of-living squeeze
What it is. Prices, rents and mortgage costs are rising faster than most people's pay.
How it moves events. When wages buy less, people march, strike and vote against whoever is in charge.

US tariffs and market access
What it is. The US is using tariffs, import bans and trade deals to decide who can sell to American buyers and on what terms.

Sovereign debt and bond markets
What it is. Governments borrow by selling bonds, and investors charge more interest to the ones they trust less.
How it moves events. A wider spread raises a government's interest bill, leaves less money for everything else and can trigger downgrades or central-bank rescues.

- French bond stress and the Moody's review and ECB caught between 3.8% inflation and French stress: A French crisis would force the ECB to choose between fighting inflation and using its never-used bond-buying tool.
- French bond stress and the Moody's review and French presidential election, April 2027: A downgrade or budget defeat would hand the election campaign to whoever promises order and a fiscal fix.
- French bond stress and the Moody's review and Cost-of-living riots in Milan, Turin and Bologna: Italian spreads widened in step with France's in early October, which raises Rome's borrowing costs and leaves less money to ease the price anger behind the riots.

Firms' compliance capacity
What it is. Companies have limited staff, time and money to redo paperwork and switch suppliers when trade rules change.
How it moves events. Overlapping deadlines force firms to choose which market's rules to meet first, raising costs and shifting where they buy.
